Premature greying of hair, also known as canities, is a condition where the hair loses its natural color earlier than expected, often striking individuals in their 20s or 30s. The cut off to call it “premature” greying in Indians is 25. While greying is typically associated with aging, premature greying can be attributed to various factors, including genetics, lifestyle choices, and underlying health conditions.
Genetics plays a significant role in determining when a person's hair will start to grey. If one or both parents experienced premature greying, there's a higher likelihood of inheriting this trait. Additionally, certain medical conditions such as thyroid disorders, vitamin deficiencies, and autoimmune diseases can contribute to premature greying.
